Marathi film 'Tingya' to go to Oscars as independent entry

Critically acclaimed Marathi film "Tingya", a sensitive portrayal of a six-year-old boy's love for his bull in backdrop of Maharashtra's agrarian crisis, will be sent as an independent entry to this year's Oscars in the foreign language category.

"Tingya", which has won 37 awards including five at the international festivals, lost out to Aamir Khan's "Taare Zameen Par" when a Film Federation of India (FFI) jury chose the latter as India's official entry to the Academy.

Producer of "Tingya" Ravi Rai said he will apply independently. Rai also made it clear that he bore no ill will towards the FFI jury or Aamir's film.

"'Taare Zameen Par' is my personal favourite because a top star like Aamir decided to produce and direct a film about a relevant issue concerning children," Rai said.

Pointed out that "Tingya" was equally good, he claimed the jury members had a difficult choice in selecting the official entry. The decision and went against "Tingya" on grounds that it lacked technical finesse, he said.

"I feel a film's soul is more important," he added. The noted television producer who turned to big screen with "Tingya" directed by newcomer Mangesh Hadawale said all the nine films in fray this year were deserving. "It shows that good times are here for Indian cinema," he added.

Actor Aamir Khan's directorial debut Taare Zameen Par has been selected as India's entry for the Oscar 2009 in the best foreign film category, impressing the jury with its "perfection" in all aspects of filmmaking.

Taare Zameen Par is the final choice because it has a universal appeal and it has all the elements that make a good film, in terms of its production value, script, concept and story," filmmaker Sunil Darshan said here on Saturday.

Darshan is the chairman of the 10-member jury set up by the Film Federation of India (FFI).

The movie was jointly produced by Aamir Khan Productions and PVR Pictures and starred Darsheel Safary as the protagonist. It it the story of an eight-year-old dyslexic boy and a teacher, played by Aamir, bringing the kid out of his predicament.

The other Bollywood films in competition were, A Wednesday, Rock On, Mumbai Meri Jaan, Jodhaa Akbar, Black & White - all of which have won critical acclaim. There were also two Marathi films Tingya and Vaalu and a Telegu film Gamyam in contention.

Vaalu has a fantastic screenplay and Tingya has a good and sound script. It is not that other films were bad, but Taare Zameen Par stood out among others, Darshan added.

Another jury member Mahesh Kothare, a Marathi filmmaker and actor, was all praise for the selected film.

As a jury, we had two basic intentions - that the chosen film must have a good chance of winning an Oscar and secondly, that it should meet certain parameters for an Oscar. These are content and cinematic excellence.

Taare Zameen Par has it all. It has been made so perfectly. There is perfect direction, animation, screenplay, acting, script, and so there is no reason why it shouldn't have been choosen, said Kothare.

He also exuded confidence that the film will finally bring India an Oscar in 2009.

Since the story of Vikram Bhatt's 1920 revolves around the era of 1920, the director has taken utmost pains to gather as much material as possible used during those days the sets. Also during those days people were fascinated by portraits and often had them made by famous artists. Here the portrait of Anjorie Alag depicting the era of 1920 needed to be made.

"Vikram could have used computer graphics and got a portrait made easily. But the director wanted to lend authenticity and got an actual portrait made of Anjorie Alagh," revealed a source.

"I had to pose for five hours like a statue while the artist made the portrait of me," Anjorie said laughing. She added, "The portrait is ten foot long looking absolutely authentic as it would have looked if made in 1920."

It has been known for quite some time now that Vishesh Films will be producing a sequel to Raaz. However the surprise is that it will not be directed by Vikram Bhatt who directed the original super hit, even as talks are on with the original stars Dino Morea and Bipasha Basu to be a part of the film. The sequel will be directed by the Bhattt's new blue-eyed boy Mohit Suri and it promises to be made on a much larger scale than the original.

But Vikram Bhatt fans need not be disappointed. Post several recent flops, Vikram has decided to take a look at the types of films he is undertaking and not take on more than one film at a time. He has finally found the perfect script for his next film which is title 1920 and will be a period horror film, something never before attempted.

The script has been written by Vikram himself and will be produced by his own newly formed banner A.S.A. Films Pvt. Ltd., although at this point in time he is not sure whether he will go for known actors or new faces. Watch this space for more news!

The moneylender in turn sells Birbal to a merchant Subhan Darr (Anupam Kher) who wants to gift the donkey to his nephew. Tahaan follows Darr to his town with hopes of getting Birbal back. But things aren't as easy as they seem to be.

Amidst all this, Tahaan is embroiled in a terrorist conspiracy alongside the false pretext of getting his donkey back. How does the terror campaign influence Tahaan and does he succeed in getting Birbal back forms the premise of the story.

Actor Irrfan Khan, who is eagerly looking forward to his forthcoming release "Deadline" in which he plays a kidnapper, says he is not the serious person he is made out to be by the media. He dismisses rumors that he has a no-nonsense attitude and doesn't interact with his co-stars on the sets. "On the contrary I am exactly opposite the image I have come to acquire. The people, who know me well enough, are well aware of my sense of humor. The only thing I take seriously is my work, which is above everything else for me." According to him, laughter is the best medicine for all your woes in life.

"That's why I prefer to be in the company of light-hearted people who see things in the lighter perspective. Life has taught me so much in all these years. As for work, I consider it a healing agent and enjoy every moment of it." About his role in "Deadline", he says: "It is a vindictive character with multiple shades, which runs into three different tracks. It was a challenge to enact the role." It was the strong narrative that got Irrfan interested in the film. "It gave the impression of being a very refreshing abduction story, a cut apart from the cliched one that one has seen in the past. Moreover, director Tanveer Khan was very clear from the outset about how he wanted to treat the subject. It was a very well-planned project from day one," he recalls. He enjoyed the shooting for the film because there were no delays and cancellations in the schedule.

"The film was completed in one schedule flat and everything was in place which rarely happens with productions these days." In fact, the sense of commitment and bonding in the unit was so strong that on one particular occasion the actors, including Konkona Sen Sharma and Irrfan, decided to walk to the sets for the overnight shoot on Madh Island when roads were blocked due to the Ganpati immersion ceremony. "We decided to get out of our cars and walk to the sets. We wanted to keep the pace of work going," says Irrfan. He prefers to work with productions that stick to schedules and have an organized pattern of working. He also clarifies he has no reservations about working in commercial films.

"It is a misconception that I prefer the arty and serious kind of films over the popular commercial films. The media has given the tag of a serious actor to me. The reality is that I'd rather experiment with all kinds of roles."

Bollywood producers set to release a film called "Hari Puttar: A Comedy of Terrors" are working to fend off a lawsuit filed by Warner Bros. that claims the movie title hews too closely to their mega-famous boy wizard franchise.

While Bollywood films often borrow liberally from Western movies, producers of "Hari Puttar: A Comedy of Terrors" say their movie bears no resemblance to any film in the "Harry Potter" series.

"There is absolutely nothing to link 'Hari Puttar' with 'Harry Potter,"' said Munish Purii, chief executive officer of Mumbai-based producer Mirchi Movies. Hari is a common name in India and "puttar" is Punabji for son, he said.

"Even if it does rhyme with Harry Potter, surely there is a limit to cases?" said Tarun Adarsh, editor of Trade Guide magazine.

The film is not a tale of wizard spells or flying broomsticks, but rather a story of an Indian boy left home alone, who fights off burglars when his parents go away on vacation -- a plot more reminiscent of the film "Home Alone," starring Macaulay Culkin.

Warner Bros. is seeking an injunction against the film, which is set for release September 12. Hearings began Monday and the next is scheduled for September 2.

Warner Bros. spokeswoman Deborah Lincoln confirmed that the company has filed a lawsuit against the producers of "Hari Puttar."

Once he agrees to act in the film, The Last Lear becomes a captivating reflection on the comparative artifices of stagecraft and cinema. As the outsider in the cast, Harish is hilarious in dismissing movie fakery. His theatre skills are grander. Standing on a hillside, he teaches Shabnam how to project her voice clear across a valley to the next hill.

While you wouldn't expect the Oscar-winning writer of the suburban drama American Beauty to have much to do with the horror genre, Alan Ball dealt tangentially with the supernatural when he wrote and produced five seasons of the HBO show Six Feet Under, which centered around a family-run funeral home where the "guests" offered their unfiltered opinion on the complicated dysfunctional relationships of their caretakers.With his new HBO show True Blood, Ball is taking on some "pretty hardcore genre" as he puts it. Based on Charlaine Harris' "The Southern Vampire Mysteries," the new series which premieres on Sunday, September 7th stars Anna Paquin (aka "Rogue" from the X-Men movies) as telepathic barmaid Sookie Stackhouse whose quiet Louisiana parish is set abuzz by the appearance of its first actual vampire. When ShockTillYouDrop and ComingSoon.net spoke to Ball recently about his upcoming indie drama Towelhead, we were curious to know why he decided to tackle the vampire genre with his second television series for HBO."After five years of 'Six Feet Under' and peering into the existential abyss, and contemplating the constant presence of mortality - and therefore contemplating my own mortality and the general sort of impermanence of everything - I was ready to just have a little fun. When I discovered these books, they were so much fun and they stood up and by the time I was on the fourth book I thought, 'This would make a great television series.'"Those who've actually read Harris' novels might be curious how the television series might diverge from the stories in the eight novels published so far. "We're keeping it close to the books, but at the same time, we're adding a lot of stuff because the books are narrated by the main character and there are a lot of other great characters and we're creating stuff for them to do."

Inside the Movie: The Unborn
Only one wide release - Nicolas Cage in Bangkok Dangerous - hits theaters this first week of September and it's not being screened for critics (not a good sign). So since this week's pickings are slim, there's really no better time than now to take a look at a future release, The Unborn, a horror/thriller directed by David Goyer that's heading to theaters next year. The cast and director David Goyer (writer, The Dark Knight - director, The Invisible) talked up the film at this summer's San Diego Comic Con and if it's anywhere near as creepy as they make it out to be, The Unborn is going to scare the pants off of audiences.
